How far ahead do we make plans??

I started doing this, thinking there was only a few, so there was a lot of top end races that weren't getting covered.

Just wondering so I can get in on the good 1s as well.

McAllister- First you need to claim a race to cover that is listed on the board.  With special race dates like this one, we will post a listing of races to cover and writers will claim a race and this reduces duplication as well as provides us with the ability to identify races that need coverage.  If you could post the race you desire, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can start anytime with the write up but need to remember the races are not until the end of March and owners have plenty of time to enter their horses, so the list will grow.  Horses on the bottom of the list may be forced out of the race as ones with higher points could list above them and races are restricted to 14 horses (with a few at 20).  Some owners are known to wait until the last minute to enter theirs, so articles should not be submitted until after the race is officially carded, which happens just a few days before the race.

When I cover races like these, I usually get a jump start with the article focusing on the horses with the top points as they will get carded into the race  (occasionally an owner will pull their horse out of the race before it is officially carded, so be aware of that).  Horses with lower point totals may get bumped out of the race, so I usually wait to cover the lower ones until closer to the race date.  Also, watch the list.  If  you start the article and write something on the top 5 listed horses, another one could later be added that may make it into the top 5, so you need to keep an eye on that.

The listing of entrants for grade races is subject to shifting around, but generally the top horses are in these races for a reason and you are pretty safe in covering those.
